Once Rose* was sent to custody, Amy, one of our Women’s Turnaround teammates, was assigned to her case. There were concerns around Rose*’s vulnerability, as she was isolating herself and struggling to leave her cell. Amy wanted to do something to support her, so she chose to spend an hour each week simply chatting and spend time with her. There were no expectations or agenda, just presence, patience and respect.

As well as her weekly visits, Amy consistently advocated for Rose* when it was needed and raised concerns about her physical and mental health whilst she was in custody. Amy also put support plans in place, making sure she’d have a safe place to go to when she was released.

On the day Rose* was released, she suddenly became unwell and needed to go to hospital. Once she got to hospital, she was sadly diagnosed with cancer and was put on palliative care. Amy continued to visit her each week, making sure shad someone to talk to and to remind her she’s not alone.

Shelley, one of our Women’s Turnaround teammates, joined Amy on one of her visits and was moved by the incredible compassion and person-centred support Amy had shown to Rose*. Going above and beyond to truly make a difference.

It was so humbling to see Rose's* eyes sparkle when Amy walked in the room. It was a reminder of what humility in practice looks like - meeting someone where they are, standing alongside them during their most vulnerable moments and taking the time to show them that you care.

Shelley, Women's Turnaround teammate

Amy truly lived the PSS values and made such a meaningful difference with the support she provided to Rose.

Well done, Amy!
